Monumennt to Count Vorontsov. 1880-81



The monument to Field-Marchal Count Vorontsov M. S.(1782-1856), the first viceroy in the Caucasus during 1844-54. was erected at the end of Michael Bridge, in the square later named Vorontsov (Saarbrucken Square at present). The monument was built from public contributions and unveiled on April 6, 1867. Designed by N. S. Pimenov (1812-1864), a professor of Saint - Petersburg Academy of Arts. N. S. Pimenov finished only the model of the monument and started preparatory work on casting a bronze sculpture before he died. Sculptor V. P. Kreitan (1833 - ?), his pupil, continued the work and completed it under the supervision by an Academy Coucil. The 3,5 m. high statue cast in Saint Petersburg was broight to Tbilisi and mounted on local Algeti stone pedestal. O.J. Simonson (1832-1914), Tbilisi architect supervised the process. It was the first sculptureunveiled in Tbilisi. Demoliched after the establishment of Sowiet power in Georgia. On the left of the photo you see a building that housed E. Macker's (former F. Kersten's) chemist's founded in 1864. In 1881 this chemist's moved to another building in the same square where it now stand (city chemist's # 4 at I, Saarbrucken Square).
