White Cammomile Day
In Tbilisi, as well as in the other cities of the Russian empire,
the day of the White Chamomile (or the white flower) was first celebrated
on April 20, 1911, old style. This holiday was introduced into the countries
of Europe inn 1908 on the initiative of Sweden. It was a charitable
undertaking and it aimed to intensify the fight against tuberculosis.
The choice of date for the celebration is a tribute to the first meeting
of All-Russia League on tuberculosis treatment in 1910. On this day the
authorities arranged lectures; all these measures explained the nature
of the ailment and showed ways of fighting it. All over the town the
small artificial chamomile was offered for sale. All the receipts were
handed over to societies on tuberculosis treatment. For Instance, the
receipts of April 20, 1912 were earmarked for the building of a
sanatorium and a dispensary for tuberculosis patients in Abastumani.
