St. George Street. St. George "Kvashveti" Church.

On the spot of the demolished Kvashveti Church the foundations of a new one were laid on November 25, l904 in St.George (the present Chanturia) Street. Consecrated on November l, l910. It is a two-storeyd Church, the groundfloor is taken up by the Holy Spirit Church consecrated on May 2, 1909. Designed by L.P. Bilfeld (l839- 71, an architect from Tbilisi. This church is a replica of Samtavisi Church (l030), a noted example of Georgian medieval architecture. At the same time this new Kvashveti Church shows some elements alien to old Georgian architecture. Drafts of wall ornaments were drawn by architect E.L. Andreoletti, the stone work was done by N. Agladze (l874-1956), a Georgian craftsman. The church and the Georgian nobility bank (l9l3-16) are noteworthy monuments of the so-called Georgian style, that's stylization of Georgian national architectural motifs in the architecture of Tbilisi at the - other sources mention XlVc. - a new small Our Lady oflveria church was built on thisspot. It was active for over 200 years. The present church was built on the ruins of this one.
