It has undergone numerous restoration s and alterations. It is believed that about the 12 c. the cathedral was built anew. In 1710 the dome's drum was restored. The same year the cathedral was faced with Bolnisi tuff, though some parts of it were faced in the 19 c. Interior decoration and murals were done in the 1850s, murals were done by the Russian painter G. G. Gagarin (1810-1893). The old bell tower dating back from the 15c. was restored in 1952, the new one  was built in 1812.
