Anchyskhati Basilica. General view. End of 1890s.



The basilica got its name after the so-called "Anchy" icon brought over here from southern Georgia (nowadays in Turkey) in the 17 c. An ancient and monumental building dating back from the 6 c. It underwent reconstruction's in the 17 and 19 cc. In 1966 it was given the initial appearance. The Anchiskhati bell tower is a typical specimen of Georgian latefeudal architecture. According to an inscription it was built on the initiative of Georgia's catholicos Domenty in 1675.
